Downgrade Sync 3.0 > 2.2

2016 Expedition

Has anyone done this successfully? I recently upgraded from 1.0 to 3.0 and while the display seems to show the update was successful, I can not get android auto or apple car play to work. I have been on the phone with Ford customer support twice and been through all the troubleshooting steps, master reset, check cords, etc. They dead ended into "hardware issue" which I do not believe. Im thinking the upgrade path that skipped 2.0, 2.2, and 2.3 is what's causing the issue.

I have found the 2.2 file on this forum but the read me attached states to only use it for 1.0 to 2.2. I'm curious if anyone here has downgraded successfully or had similar issues?

I tried flashing the module with my Snap On Pass Thru III and Fords FJDS software but for some reason, the APIM is the only module that cannot be programmed vis FJDS.

I spoke with a Ford Dealership this morning and they said they could try and reprogram it at $140 an hour and if it bricks, Ford would not stand behind it and I would be out a module. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Fords website specifically states there is no reason to add the other updates when upgrading to 3.0. Does not seem to be the case.

Was Apple Carplay or Android Auto working before the update?

You didn’t mention in your posting so I’ll ask. When trying to use Apple Carplay or Android Auto, was your phone plugged into the USB?

If so, have you checked the actual USB port because they can and do fail so this “might” be a reason why you can’t get Apple Carplay or Android Auto to work.

Last but not least, and I hope I’m wrong, have you had the APIM checked?

I upgraded from 1.0 straight to 3.0 so AA or Carplay was not available. From what I've read they were both added with 2.2.

Yes plugged into both USB ports with multiple cables.

I think the reason Carplay won't work is because I haven't upgraded the USB hub. I'm an android guy so I was only trying it as a test.

Neith app appears in the settings menu as it should.

As far as checking the APIM, everything else works. I have a snap-on scanner and can't find anything wrong with it code wise. I would be really surprised if it was a hardware issue.

Ahh okay.

I would definitely try a new Apple Carplay specific hub first.

I had to change mine in my 2016 F150 to get Apple Carplay to work.

Very easy to replace.

I’m sure you know they’re relatively cheap and the prices are all over the place online but they usually fall between $35.00-$50.00 dollars depending on where you get it.

Fairway Ford is a great source.

They have an Ebay storefront and free shipping.

Were you able to solve the problem? having the same issue with my 2016 mustang. Upgrading the USB hub didn't fix it.

I’m having the same issue with my 2016 mustang. I upgraded the usb hardware to the HU5Z-19A387-A but get an error (with nothing plugged in) that states:

his USB device is not supported" but NO USB device is plugged in“

I also went from 1.0 to sync 3.0 and skipped the 2.2, I’d love to downgrade to 2.2 but it doesn’t seem possible. I spoke to Ford dealership and they said my mustang shouldn’t even be able to upgrade to 3.0 but they are obviously idiots.

Will do! I haven't been able to find the old 2.2 files anywhere online. I'm going to call a few more dealers to see if any of them are less dumb. Will keep you posted.

Update: Problem Solved

I wanted to downgrade to 2.2 for the same reasons as the op. I ended up not having to. I used the cyanlabs tool to update to the lates version of Sync 3.3. That reformatted the drive and fixed my problem.
