Does anyone know about a ignition recall on the 1988 F-250. Rumor has it that it was recalled because the ignition module is being over heated by the location of the module. The module is located under the distributor cap, I heard that the module is suppose to moved by Ford to someplace on the firewall. Does anyone know about this recall. I tried contact my local Ford dealership and Fords Customer Service department but no one is getting back to me. I'm dissappointed that Ford forgets about it's older customers.
The only ignition related recall I can remember was for switch, back in the late 80's there was a TSB for the modules on the 4-bangers in tempos/escorts for the problem you mentioned. But I could be wrong.
There was never a recall for the TFI module. There was a class-action lawsuit settlement (Howard v. Ford Motor Company). After 6 years of litigation, damages claims in the billions of dollars, and a trial (which ended in a mistrial), the Class lawyers and Ford agreed to settle the case. Ford agreed to provide "extended warranty coverage" as the benefit to the class members. The vehicle has to have less than 100000 miles, and the module has to be an orignal Ford TFI. The module is not moved to the fender; that would be too difficult and expensive for broad application. (Though some "hot rodders" have cooked up a do-it-yourself retrofit).
The lawyers asked for $28 million dollars in legal fees, and probably were the primary beneficiaries of the litigation. If you want to pursue your rights as a class member, take a look at www.tfisettlement.com
Personally, I would just pay the $39.00 at Autozone and not have anything to do with those nice card carrying members of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Sometimes I think manufacturing gets moved to China, Korea, etc in part to escape the reach of the litigators.
I remember having some recall work done on my '90 F150--related to the ignition module. All they did was add some sort of heat shield, but I don't remember the particulars. They even got ahold of me to do it, and I was the second owner of the truck.
Thanks for the web site location but all it did was state the obvious that the ignition switch but it doesn't say how the problem should be corrected or why the switch is no good.
I have an alldatadiy subscription. There is a Ford safety recall listed for the ignition switch in the steering column. This has nothing to do with the "ignition module located under the distributor cap" (actually the TFI module located on the side of the distributor body.) I cannot find even a TSB on the TFI module -- the ongoing litigation may have caused Ford to refrain from such a publication.
The ignition switch recall applies to F-series pickups built from 1988 to 1991. I have pasted the relevant details below.
Ford Safety recall 95S28
Reason For Recall
On some of the affected vehicles, a short circuit could develop in the ignition switch that could lead to overheating, smoke, and possibly fire in the steering column area of the vehicle. The condition may occur while the vehicle is in use or unattended.
Service Action
To correct this potential condition, the ignition switch will be replaced with a revised design switch. The wiring in the upper steering column area will also be inspected for the installation of any aftermarket electrical accessories. If an improper installation is noted, you are to advise the customer of the need to have the condition corrected. These correction costs are not part of this recall.
