Hello,
I am new to 292 's and I am rebuilding a engine I have. I found some head gaskets and was which one would be better to put on it. The composite or the steel. The steel are ford one I picked up.
What do you all recommend? Any tips when rebuilding also would be greatly appreciated.
I put the compsite ones on my 272 although I have a set of steel shim gaskets,, one thing to watch is the head bolts, 4 of the long bolts are a little longer than the others, these go in the head dowel holes, if you put them in any other hole, they bottom out before the correct torque is reached.
A modern composite gasket will be more trouble free. Steel gaskets can be difficult to seal and need to be retourqued..
Things to be aware of:
Shim gaskets are thinner than composite gaskets by approximately 15 to 20 thousandths. This means that everything else equal, compression will be lower with composite gaskets. This is easy to account for by milling the difference off of the block and / or heads.
If the block has been 0 decked (that is that the top of the piston, at tdc, is at the exact height as the head surface of the block), then shim gaskets may be too thin, leaving inadequate clearance between the piston and head, meaning that the piston will hit the head.
Simply have the machinist check these if you are not comfortable doing it yourself.
