I have a '50 F-2 with worn out rear spring shackles. The pins wore through the brass bushings, and oblonged the bore. After searching through the forum, it seems like a fairly common issue.
No one carries 59Y-5776 Shackles anymore, I called around. What have you guys been doing to remedy the issue?
I took the shackles, bushings and pins to a local welding and machining shop.
They gave me two options:
- drill out the hole in the shackle until round and make a custom bushing for that hole
- braze or weld a bead into the hole and redrill tofit the bushing.
Since the shackle is cast iron, I would have preferred the first option, but there would not have been enough meat left, so the second options was the one we went with.
Cost $90 per shackle. Expensive, but the only shop close-by who could/wanted to do it, and who I felt was going to do it right.
I'm in the same boat with the clutch/brake pedal shaft. No one makes them, and they are no longer available. I'm hoping the machine shop can easily make a new one.
According to the LMC catalog the F-1 48-52 rear spring shackle is different from the F-100 53-56 spring shackle. Also the shackle for the F-2 is different than the F-1 shackle. The F-100 shackle is different than the F-250 shackle. Neither the F-2 or F-250 shackle is available.
I hope this clarifies the situation.
My truck is a 1948 F-1 for which I have the original front and rear spring frame brackets, shackles, pins and bushings which are in good condition.
Ah that's too bad Philip, I appreciate the offer though. I sent my shackles to a machine shop, they are going to repair them. Same shop as Dre. For whatever reason they quoted me $125 per shackle, not cheap, but about my only option
I bought these swing hangers I think in 2018. I’m pretty sure I got them at Mid Fifty. Here is the packaging. You can see the date code on it 2/21/17
It also lists 40-52 1 ton/ 53-56 f250 and f350. They are the same size as the original ones that came off of the truck. 1952 M3 (F3). Even though the parts book show a different part , these clearly fit. They have part # TBAA-5776-A. I have an NOS one I found at a swap meet and you can see it is the same as the repro ones I installed and same as old one in side by side comparison in photo. I’m not sure if they are still available. , Doug.
