Looking for thoughts on bed storage. Particularly, the two feet at the tailgate. Thinking of a 2x4 frame with totes inserted, or a collapsible bag. What do you all have? With a BedRug, it’s impossible to use the slots meant for 2x6’s, so I’d have to improvise.
I did this on my 2011 truck with the 6.5' bed. My daughter wanted the same set up for her 2018 but it didn't seems possible as hers has a different pocket design than mine. So, I followed Robbgt's lead and bought a bar that is long enough to separate the bed lengthwise or by width. For $25.00 it's actually stronger than I thought it would be.
When shopping for hers, I saw others that had a net attached but I like the idea of totes better.

I built 1/4" aluminum plates that mount to the four side wall holes and attached an k monopoint to each. Tap for 6MM thread. You can attach anything to them and cut holes in the bedrug (I have a bedrug also)

I use a Bed Slide. I had one in my 07 F150 and liked it so I put one in my 15 F150. One drawback, The height clearance between the slide and my bed cover is tight. A light duty Bed Slide like I had in my 07 would be better in this application. The heavy duty slide would be perfect for working trucks with a topper.
I have a Supercab with and 8' bed made a grid of 2x10 lumber that looks like the letter H with a bar across the bottom.
The sides of the H are along the inside of the wheel wells, between these the and inside wall of the bed I can put long things like a shovel, axe, etc. The upper part of the H is under the fixed portion of the tonneau cover, here I have four soft tool bags with tie-downs, shackles, straps, and other equipment I keep in the struck. There piece that goes across the bottom of the H is at the rear end of the wheel well and provides a space between it and the tailgate for items I want to keep handy. Large items such as beds, 4x8 sheets etc. sit on top of the grid.
The grid is held together by loose tenons and straps, no screws or glue, so it can be easily dismantled without tools if needed.
If I was doing it again I would likely use 3/4" exterior plywood, there is no need for the strength and bulk of a 2x10 in this application.
