Need a little help here guys, Truck runs well, does not appear to be any vacuum leaks, trottle body is spotless, ran injector cleaner several times, yet keep getting that cel every 50miles or so, (reset by disconnect battery & idle to let computer relearn idle) also cleaned maf sensors. plugs burning fine.....any ideas?
additionally, p174 is lean on bank 2, does that mean that the reading is low ox and that the mixture is actually rich? or does it mean that the mixture is lean?
The answe to your question is, both. When it says "lean" it means that what it's seeing come down the pipe is lean which should cause the computer to make that bank more rich.
So you are saying that its seeing the mixture as too lean. And since its too lean then the system tries to enrich it. Correct? As far as the sensor, I did change the back one on bank 2 didn't help. you could argue should have changed the front one...it did have a code for a sensor before change but it pointed to back one. My current thinking is that its got a problem in one of the injectors, either a little air leak or an obstruction...but can't verify unless I pull the rail....
I don't have a book at the house that goes that far (new) but the code should tell you exactly which sensor it is talking about. It should say something like B2S1 (bank 2 switch 1). How about the hose to the PCV? I believe these have an elbow that tends to get soft and leak.
No, the only code I got from two different readers (autozone and snap-on) was that p174. I saw the other thread where the guy fixes the problem with the bad elbow....i don't have one, straight plastic pipe from pcv to intake hose. I am just trying to think of things that would be specific to bank 2. A vacum leak, shouldn't give a lean just for bank 2. Gotta be something simple...you know, just thinking, when I got the truck it had two different kind of spark plugs on it....I've seen that twice in a ford. Ever hear of anyone trying to tune the mixture by using different heat ranges...that has bothered me for a long time....
Stepman, thanks for the input....I'm going to go poke under the hood a little more and see if I missed anything...nothing better to do on a rainy day .....have a good one.
Does that have the "coil packs"? I thought that was strange too with the plugs but they come that way new. Something about the polarity when firing. ( can't remember exactly right now) They come with different plugs in the seperate banks new but replacements are the same all around.
Not familiar with your motor (what is it?) depending where things draw their vacuum from could affect just one bank if you have acc that may have a leak. Or maybe intake with a small leak.
Hi dustyjoe and welcome to the forum
DTC P0174 bank 2 indicate the fuel/air ratio is too lean. The fuel trim system is at the rich correction limit.
Like stepman said you could have an intake leak that is just affecting the one bank. I'd take some spray carb cleaner such as Carb Medic and with the engine idling start spraying it all around the intake manifold. If the idle changes anywhere you spray then you've found your leak.
And the code you got is for the front O2 on the driver's side. The back sensor isnt really used as an O2. It is used to make sure the catalytic convertor is working properly.
Since the truck runs fine I'd guess you just have a bad sensor.
IT is a 4.2 Liter, essex/windsor v6 manufactured 12/97. It has the coil pack above the manifold in a central location and has regular spark plug wires. My first thought on the plugs was that someone serviced it and was too cheap to buy the whole set...kind of like only changing one side of the brakes (pet peeve) but then I saw the same thing in lincoln continental with a 4.6 v8 but also with the coil packs and plug wires...and I thought what in the world is ford doing and why.....never though about it again until I start having this lean code problem....
dave ..changed the sensor, cleared codes, 50 miles later, cel is back on...couldn't find any leaks, not to say there aren't any...kind of hard to get to the back of the engine....will keep trying...thanks again
No, not yet..kind of a busy week, but it acts the same so I'm assuming same p0174. I'll stop by autozone next week and verify it. will keep you posted.
did you ever find the problem? The PCV valve can cleaned with carb cleaner and the plastic tube that connects to it usually goes bad at the elbow joint that connects under the intake plenum (just underneath the IAC). I replaced the entire plastice tube with one rubber hose.....
No never found it, just gave up on it for now...all connections look good and couldn't find any leaks....doesn't seem to be bothering anything except for that ugly yellow light...just pulled 5000 lb trailer from pittsburgh pa to south texas without so much as a hiccup from the truck...one of these days It will just occur to me what the problem is and Ill post it, till then, I'll just have to put up with that ugly yellow light......by the way, I wish a had a v8 too. that little v6 got quite a work out in WV mountains. Actually i really wish I had 3.73 rear axle rather than a 3.08...the v6 did pretty good all things considered.
regards
