Understanding the early 6.7 valve cracking problems

a lot of folks incorrectly believe the early 6.7 cracked cable problem is caused by broken glow plugs. As explained in this video, broken glow plugs and cracked valves are two different problems.

The valve failure only affects the sodium filled valves in the chassis cabs trucks.

The trucks sold before April 2010 had exhaust seat problems. The exhaust seats would "fall out" of the heads. This would cause the valve warping or valve failure. To prevent the dealer from spending hours tearing the engine down, they determined a quick check was to inspect the tips of the glow plugs. If damaged, then they concluded the valve seats failed. If not damaged, then they would have to disassemble the engine to determine the problem.

By now, most of those engines should have exhibited the failure if they were going to fail and have been fixed

Not to argue, Larry, but I believe that it was trucks with a "build date" prior to 3/11 that were a part of the valve problem. See this reference post. Actually, that entire thread is about this issue.

There are glow plug tip break off problems and there are cracked valve problems with no damage to glow plugs.

The cracked valve problem was predominantly on the passenger side cylinder heads .

The glow plug tips were never an issue unless there was a valve damage.

The passenger side is the side the PCM/ECM controlled the extra fuel flow to perform a regen. It was the only side that dumped extra fuel for regen. I am not sure as I have never got any clarification if Ford changed this strategy in later updates/engines.
