MERCON, MERCON V and MERCON SP are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON, MERCON V and MERCON SP. Use of dual usage fluids in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON SP may cause transmission damage. Use of a transmission fluid other than there commended fluid may cause transmission damage.
Either Mercon SP or Mercon LV will work. The original fluid was Mercon SP and this is reflected in the owners manual, however Ford has since updated its recommendation to Mercon LV and this is what the dealers usually use. I switched to Mercon LV about a year ago and did not notice any difference. Where you need to be careful is if maintenance was neglected and the fluid and filter change is significantly overdue. All ATF's are great cleaners and will knock lose accumulated contaminates, and if there is a lot it will cause problems. Good Luck, Russ
Mercon LV and SP are interchangeable and compatible, mercon SP was discontinued a long time ago. All 5 and 6 speed TorqueShift transmissions get Mercon LV.
I use Mercon SP exclusively. It is available at any parts house but I get it from Rockauto at a savings close to $3.00 per quart less. That's what Ford wanted back in the day and that's what I am going to use. I've heard too many horror stories of failed solenoids due to improper fluid. https://www.rockauto.com/en/tools/tr...on+fluid,11387
I just use Valvoline MaxLife synthetic....it meets specs for many fluids, incl LV (read the bottle). My 6R140 works just fine with it, towing across Colorado.....but use whatever warms your panties the best!

And that's correct for your 6R140 but his '06 has a 5R110W which took SP specifically. They are different animals and require different fluids.

I used the same in my 2007 F-250 when I changed the trans temp sensor at 125k miles. Worked great, had no issues in 20k miles of hard use. Traded truck on a 2019 F-250, it had 145k on the odometer.
One reason it's good to know that LV supercedes SP is sometimes bottles of (even quality) aftermarket fluids won't specify that it's good for SP but will list LV
If:
X=Y and
Y=Z
X must equal Z
Ya never know when you'll be standing in a WalMart or tiny town Carquest in an emergency just looking for ANY fluid to get you down the road, so knowledge is power, as cliche as that is
Case in point....at O'Reilly today.... Valvoline MaxLife lists Mercon LV, doesn't say a word about SP... so good to know your compatibilities in yer head
