Transfer case leak

Transfer case leak

Hey guys, I have got a 95 f150 4x4. The rear drive shaft seal in the transfer case (a rubber seal) is leaking pretty bad. I replaced the seal but it still leaks, any ideas on how to stop that? I assume it will be something that wraps around the drive shaft just to make it a little bigger, but I'm no proffesional and wanted to hear your guy's ideas.

Your driveshaft could be grooved where it meets the seal to where it cannot seal up. Either that or your output shaft bushing is worn.

I agree with jas88.

Bearing play can be checked by pushing/pulling the driveshaft yoke top to bottom and side to side. SOME movement is normal, but if you can cause a gap between the lip of the seal and driveshaft, the bearing is worn.

A groove where the lip seals is normal, but to check if it’s too deep, drag your fingernail over it. If it’s too deep, your fingernail will “catch” on the groove. Another way is to take a penny and try scratching it over the groove - copper from the penny will fill the gap.

National Bearing makes sleeve repair kits for these grooves BUT they’re not available for everything. If you use one, apply a thin film of RTV to the groove to ensure it can’t leak between the sleeve and shaft - the excess will be scraped off by the sleeve.

The grooved part of the driveshaft can be exposed without removing it by lifting the frame until the axle hangs low and the tires are off the ground.

Thank you for the reply! I checked my bearing and it looks good, also there is no groove in my driveshaft. I got a speedi sleeve and installed it and that snugged it up and now it dosent leak anymore.
