switching

Am switching from 6V to 12V on a '51 239, I know the starter will handle the 12V but do I have to buy a 12 V regulator or will the 6 volt work?
The alternator that I bought supposedly only needs one wire from the alternator to the battery post of the regulator so I can just disconnect the other 2 wires from the field and ground?

To answer the question, no. You do not need a 12V regulator.

If you are using a 1-wire alternator, you don't even need the voltage regulator. Connecting to the battery post of the regulator by-passes it completely. You can disconnect and tie-off or remove the other wires.

Excuse the stupid questions but am not an electrician, so I run one wire to the battery connection on the regulator and then through the breakers to the ampmeter and the other wires just take off?

I just looked at the wring diagram for a '49-'50. If the wiring is in good shape, and it's all there, then you should be good to go.

As you said, connect to the "Battery" wire, remove the others.

Are you installing a positive ground alternator or switching to negative ground also?

Then you will also have to change the direction of the wire that passes through the ammeter loop, otherwise your ammeter will read backwards (not a big deal if it doesn't matter to you).
I guess you already know about the voltage reducer for the other gauges. Also, if you're installing a much higher output alternator over the stock generator you may have to step up some wire sizes.

Thanks for the info on switching the wires around on the amp meter, the gauges are 12 volt and am using 12 ga wiring so that should be OK

Ok, didn't know you already upgraded the wiring. Sounds like you're good to go.
