Question about left/rear caliper

I noticed something recently that got me thinking, and then another thing just a couple days ago. My truck is on it's third rear driver's side caliper and I've owned it less than 3 years, while the one on the passenger side has never seemed to be a problem. What I noticed however, is that one sits behind the axle, while the more problematic driver side mounts to the front side of the axle, I assume getting blasted by water/salt/road grime worse than the passenger side, and probably explaining the high failure rate of calipers on that position. However a couple of days ago I had mom's E99 over to the tire place for leaking valve stem, and I got to looking closer at the rear axle. There is a splash shield totally covering the caliper on the driver side on her truck! Is this a part that just went missing on my truck at some point? (The passenger side on hers does not have one). I can not seem to find this part listed on the online parts catalogs such as Tasca or Ford Parts Giant. Anybody know anything on this?

Are you referring to the splash shield? I just checked Tasca and it shows the same part for a 1999 and a 2002 F250. # 5 in the photo

That appears to be it.

I don’t think that shelid does much to prevent road spray from affecting the caliper.

What is the failure mode of caliper?

Stuck or sticky slide pins and cheap (any over-the-counter) pads cause excessive heat build up and can reduce caliper lifespan. I often use IR thermometer to check tires, bearings and brakes when traveling with trailers. It’s usually easy to see when something is wrong.

I only lube caliper slide pins with dielectric grease. This provides the longest service life of any lubricant I’ve used.

My preference for brake pads is EBC Yellowstuff. These pads have significantly better stopping power than any other option and appear to do that with less heat. I have used them on my trucks for 10yrs and put them on dozens of trucks.

It wasn't the slide pins at least this last time around. Tried greasing them and problem persisted so it must have been the pistons themselves sticking and seizing up. Threw a new caliper on (again) and that fixed it. On the back are nothing-special pads but they showed very little wear so back in they went. (I have EBC Yellows on the front). Could be a coincidence I suppose that the same position failed again but now I am suspicious.

Cool I'll probably pick that up. Thanks for finding! I have a Dana 80 DRW but I am pretty sure it is the same caliper and hardware. Those bracket bolts look identical to mine and I cold not figure out why they had extra threads sticking out the end of them but now it makes sense. I'm assuming somebody took it off mine and didn't bother replacing it.
