Need Brake light help

My brake lights are not working, so I look under the dash and this is what I got....

plug that connects to the brake light switch

when I connected a wire from the "residential wire nut" red wire to the brake light switch (so a red wire is connected to both terminals on the switch), the brake lights illuminate and when I depress the brake pedal they go out, switched the wires.....same thing?

Kinda looks like someone had something going on with a trailer brake at one time and hacked it all to pieces. I would go to a junk yard and get the switch, plugin, and as much of the wiring out of a donor as you need to get back to where it was originally cut.

Is it a cylindrical plunger type switch? Might have been replaced with the wrong type in the past.
Because they're just an open/close or on/off switch, it won't matter which position which wire is in. As you found out.
But either the switch is mounted in the wrong position, the switch is defective, or the wrong part number switch was used.

But aside from that, ya definitely gots lots of issues with the wiring!
A new spade connector of the correct type can be crimped to the busted wire for the switch, but I also see a bare wire in the background (by the green one, or perhaps it is the green one?) and wire nuts are strictly verboten under the dash.
To be honest, I'm not really sure why everyone gives wire nuts such a bad time, because every time I've run across them they were working great!
But they're not sealed unless you get the goop filled outdoor type, and are not as secure as a good crimp/solder joint.

Good luck.

Got it! Ran new wires to the switch and adjusted the switch on the pedal assembly.
