So I saw a poll on another thread from this website for people to review their experiences with the tuner itself, their specific tune, and with the company's tech support. I read where some people modified the settings to add a few degrees of timing to make a noticeable difference in the engines response. I'd like to try this, but also don't want to nuke anything. Has anyone done this to their 6.8 who can walk me through the process? Also, is there a tune available that takes into consideration the addition of their Y-pipe? I installed the tuner before I did any exhaust mods, so if something is available, I'd love to upload that tune to make greater use of the tuner. Thanks!
I had a '13 F150 5.0 and used 5star, MPT and also OZ. My device was an SCT X4 which I still have and have used. (It has a nice gauge feature that works on my Ex w/7.3 diesel)
I had no issues with any of the companies mentioned so I can't praise or dog any. If I want a tune on a gasser for "power" I would use the MPT 93x. If I wanted a good all around tune I'd say OZ is a good choice but so is 5star. So, what tuner/device do you have now?
Suppose I should have elaborated. I already have the SCT from 5Star with their canned 87 Eco, 87 Perf, and 91 Tow tunes loaded on it. I have adjusted some parameters for idle RPMs, axle ratio (4.30), and tire size/revolutions. I'm wanting to add about 2 degrees of timing to see if I can improve on the bottom end a little bit. I'm unsure how to do this on the controller or if any of the tunes loaded have already added anything to the base timing. I asked this question on the thread with the poll, but so far, no one has responded. Figured I'd ask the good folks here in X-land.
I will plug mine back up and take a look at the canned tune options(if I can do that now). I never used them and I'm not sure if you can alter them like with timing or fuel, etc. Since timing could technically cause engine issues if it was set far too advanced. Seems like a liability unless they allowed a scenarion like "X degrees change but no more"
I'd have to plug in my SCT to see the exact options, but yes, you can adjust timing in I think 3 RPM ranges. I have actually turned it back 2 deg at the higher RPM when towing with the 87 Perf tune due to pinging when I was towing up in the mountains of Tn. When I ordered my tunes, I added my mods in my order (headers and Y pipe) before I had (and still have to do) them in place. What parameters can/need to be changed when adding headers and Y pipe, I have no idea. I have also played a little with the Trans shift options, but see very little difference. I see more when going from the Perf to the Eco tunes.
Just used the X to tow our sleds for a weekend snowmobiling trip. Prior to hitting the road, I uploaded the tow tune and messed around with some of the settings. I could retard timing at each of the RPM intervals selected, but the only way I could add timing was at the WOT setting. I'm rarely ever at WOT, but thought I'd give it a shot. Don't recall going WOT since there is snow on the ground here, but didn't hear any pinging and nothing resulted in a nuclear meltdown.....so that is good.
