I have a dome light with a cracked plastic terminal housing which leads me to believe it is disconnected, however what is worse and a whole other problem is that when I switch the map lights on the middle dome light comes on, brighter if I switch on both. Also when those are switched on, the dome light will only work if the door is closed. Something seems reversed... any advice from the wiser among us?
Here's a diagram. You should have a lightgreen/yellow wire up there. It should be hot all the time 12v. It's for the map lights which can be used at any time. If you can't find a lightgreen/yellow wire up there, that means someone has installed a light with the map light option that your truck was not wired for.
There should be a black/lightblue wire up there, that turns the dome on from the door switches. There should also be a black/pink up there, that turns the dome on from the lightswitch. Do you have a cargo light on back of the cab? If not, that is another clue that your truck did not have the lighting group option. You should have dome lights under the dash on each side also if you have the lighting group option.
Sounds like the map light grounds are running through the dome light. I'd inspect the wiring around the door jamb switch. They get monkeyed with because of the buzzer.
Yes, I have both a cargo lamp and floor lighting... the main light turns on when the door is closed and you flip the switches for the map lights... I have never seen the map lights come on. Could I splice into the cargo light wire or should I just look for the third wire yellow and green that I don’t see?
Check the ground screws. IIRC the screws go through the wire end fitting and are also the fixture mounting screws. If the map light has been removed before the connections could have been kluged. It's not a robust design.
Hey guys having a similar issue with my 86 Bronco. Pulled a dome light from the yard and the main bulk works with open doors as it should but neither switch work. Also there’s only one black wire up there in the photo. Is this normal and if so am I doomed to no light switch?

If your truck did not have the lighting group option, then you may not have the wire you need for the map light function. You can see in the diagram below near the bottom, there are two options. A plain domelight option which only has a black/lightblue wire and the map light option which has a extra lightgreen/yellow wire.
