You must be young, or in better shape than me, or both, I love the step.
You should be able to trade it out pretty easy.....For resale value, better just leaving it there JMO
Good luck
I wish I was young. A few years short of turning 50, shattered an ankle in 2014 and well out of shape but working every day to get back into shape.
As for resale value that doesn't mean much to me. I buy a truck to use it for me not worry about what the next person will use it for. Also we keep them forever. My last truck was an 09 F150 traded in with 170k miles. The wife's car is an 2006 with 189k so in either case if it has a step or not is not going to make any difference.
To add on, I installed the Ford OEM damper and it works great when lowering the tailgate. It’s well worth the money spent and it’s only a 20 minute installation. The only additional tool cost was $2.50 to buy a T50 Torx socket at Home Depot.
It unfortunately does nothing to reduce the effort needed to raise the tailgate.
I don't think the tailigate is that bad for weight. Now I will say the first time I opened it was right after opening my F250 tailgate to make sure the bed was empty and I went wow is this heavy. I never put 2 and 2 together that it was due to the step. I've seen the dampers though. They are pretty cool and I can see where they would help out.
Why don’t you post your location, F-150 model and color.
You may be surprised someone near you may have a new truck without the step and would be willing to swap with you. If I didn’t already have a tailgate step I would swap and pay you enough to line-x the tailgate.
I have to figure out how to add a signature as I was just in my profile and didn't see anything. To answer your question I'm in SE WI and it's a 2019 XLT in Ingot Silver.
Yes, the weight does make you reconsider if you need the step - the only option on my 2019 that I would not have chosen. It's heavy to close on a tall 4x4 although not all that hard either. I have about decided to let it stay, might use it more someday. And that extra weight over the rear of the truck may help some with traction in winter.
Well my last 2 have both have the step and I didn't think the weight was that bad. Then I added the aluminum plate for the factory ramps, now that sucker is heavy. I have only needed the ramps twice, but I kept them from the 2015, glad I did though.
Guess you guys have never had a truck with a real metal tailgate. These things are pretty light. Even my 14 year oil daughter doesn't complain about it after coming from my 2001 Ram.

Well, I'm 59...Works for me
Hell of a lot easier than climbing into the boxes of my dump truck, truck and trailer

Same thought here. I can’t believe how many threads I read that I just shake my head and think how modern technology is light years ahead in so many ways, and everyone expects more. Or, those who expect their truck to be like a car... it is too long, it turns too wide, it rides rough, etc. Frankly, and I know the OP was not asking to change his tailgate out due to weight, but if 40# or even a 100# is THAT big of a deal in payload, you should’ve thought it out and stepped up when you bought it. The msin reason these trucks are so expensive is the manufacturers cater to every single need and just about every combination. Then when we can’t get a heated steering wheel with a certain Lariat trim package, “It’s not fair! I’m paying for this truck. I should get what I want”. Then we ALL pay for what YOU want. At least the OP is grabbing the bull by the horns and trying to do a mod, rather than expecting Ford should have supplied blank-out plates for the tailgate, just in case a consumer wanted to switch out the gate at a later date. 😆

Works for 73 year old me and wife. We have tailgate steps on both our 19 F-150 and 19 F-350. Both have dampers so they lower softly. But it takes 2 hands to raise them comfortably. Surprisingly the F-150 takes more effort to close than the F350.
The tailgate step is a necessity for me. No way could I get into the bed without it.
