My dealer has my 2010 SCREW FX4 in now, my question is this:
It has the tailgate step, I was wanting to Line-X the complete bed, tailgate included. They first told me they could remove the tailgate plastic protector along with the folding handle, no problem, I wouldn't even know it was there. I guess not, no can do? They've offered to swap tailgates from a black Lariat (both have the backup camera), but the Lariat has a chrome handle. Really didn't want the chrome handle, how hard is it to replace the handle?
Has anyone removed there tailgate protector & assist handle? I was told there was several exposed holes underneath? I don't mind the step, but really dislike the tailgate protector & handle.
You can remove the tailgate protector and handle and replace it with a "plain" tailgate protector. It's an identical fit it just doesn't have the moulding for the step assist handle.
They also sell a smaller piece that will just cover the holes if you don't want full coverage.
I want to do they exact same thing. Some day when i get enough time a buddy at work has the same truck without the handle and i'm going to remove his and see if it will fit on mine.
You can definitely replace it with the panel from a tailgate without the step/handle. There are pics in a different online forum from someone that did it. I will post the link if I can find it.
Why are so many people against the step/handle? I like mine alot and use it whenever I get in the bed to access my toolbox. Maybe I'm just starting to show my age (43)...lmao!

I love the step and use it often. The handle on the other hand i have never had to use it. It usually just gets in the way when i'm trying to slide Sheetrock or plywood in the bed. Plus, like the OP, i want to have a spray in liner installed on the tailgate as well.
I left the plastic cover on the tailgate when I had the spray-in liner done. As soon as my F-150 arrived at the dealer, I had the dealer ship the truck out for the bedliner. Everything done before I took possession.
The tailgate latch handle is a piece of cake to swap out...once the plastic or steel cover is removed, I believe four nuts hold it in place and, once out, the lock cylinders are easy to swap as well. If your dealer will swap tailgates, they could easily swap out handles in a half-hour or so.
I am thinking about getting my bed line-x.
Yes i do have the step and boy do i love it for the times i have used it. I would like to remove the handle (i think) since at my young age i can get into the bed just fine and when loading my ice fishing sled its kinda hard sliding.
SO my question is CAN I SOMEDAY put the handle back on???
No way I would swap my tailgate with a step for a regular tailgate....the pole isn't used much but the step gets used often. You should be able to swap it for a standard gate and some cash pretty easily because there are a ton of people with regular gates that want the one with a step and they fetch good money on Ebay.
use my step & pole frequently and wouldn't sell or trade it...only problem is with a rigid bed cover, it doesnt open wide enough to step all the way in, but nevertheless the step & pole sure help to reach the cargo way in the back! Best part is when someone new asks what the pole is for...tell them its an antenna for contacting other planets & watch the reaction! :-)
I agree I wouldn't trade it! BUT I am thinking about removing the pole FOR now while i am still young and don't really need it to get it the back of the truck but i would keep the step for sure.
So does anyone know if i remove the pole and put fords plate over it can i someday in the future put the pole back on ??
Also a ford part number?
