F150 with slippery tailgate step

I have a 2014 F150 with the factory tailgate step. I love the step but the plastic bedliner covering the tailgate is horrible. I've done alot of searching and the only thing I've found is a bedrug to cover it.

What have you guys done to avoid falling? Does anyone know what's underneath the cover? If you have a spray in bedliner did they remove it?

I have a 2014 with tailgate step also. I installed a bed rug, it installs over the plastic liner on the tailgate. The liner has to be loosened for the rug to tuck in, under the plastic liner is nothing. You can see the inside of the tailgate with it removed, I think Ford did this to keep some weight off of the tailgate.

Found others that remove the handle and cover. Then the go to Ford and buy the metal tailgate insert to cover the holes where the handle was just like a normal tailgate. They keep the set but ditch the cover and handle.

Thanks for the info on the bedrug.
