Well, we think we got sold a starter for an automatic and we have a manual transmission.
The distance from the front of the plate between the block and bell housing to the back of the ring gear was about 3/4 inch. The starter fully extended about 1-1/4 inches, which was too far. In that regard, a retaining plate in the starter was making contact with the ring gear and getting consumed.
There are two different starters. One is for a manual transmission and the other is for automatic. The automatic has a longer shaft about an 1/8" or so. Make sure it is the correct starter
