Engine hoist question.

Would a 2 ton engine hoist be enough to pull my motor, transmission and transfer case in one piece or would I have to pull just the motor then drop the transmission and transfer case?

The problem with a 2 ton is that rating is with the extension all the way in. You won't have enough forward reach or lift height. Worth checking but locally all the rental equipment stores rent engine hoists. I was able to rent a 6 ton hoist for 50.00 a day. Much better than the folding cheapo ones.

I never thought about having to extend the hoist. That's a good tip though to check equipment rentals. I would've never thought of that

The engine by it's self will eat close to 1000 Lb. I can list a transfer case my self but not a trans.
With the three stuck together I bet your close to 1700 Lb. Also as long as this will be I thing it's
asking for problems. The transfer case is also going to add a little rotation to the assembly.

Myself I would split at the bell-housing and make some offset tabs to hold the torgqe converter
in place whele the engine is getting moved out. Then I would use a heavy section of "L" bracket
with holes drilled in it to really lock that torque converter in. You don't want that to slip forward
on the input shaft as it will kill the transmission very quickly at startup if not installed correctly.

I would split them and do them separately.

To expand on this, the trans and transfer case are long (at least on my crewcab) and you could lift from the front of the engine but never get the back of the unit to come up without some additional lifting of some sort. Also doubt you could get a hoist far enough back on the engine to lift from the balance point because the cab would likely be in the way. Not sure about this because I didn't try it. I dropped the trans and case together, Not too bad a job once you get the converter nuts out. They pulled my cab when they did my heads on my second truck.

Well I just wanted to know if it was possible to pull everything at once. But I'll just pull the motor separately. Now what's this about the torque converter? Although I don't have to much concern about the torque converter because I'm doing a Cummins swap and in that process I'm swap out my 5r110 with a zf6 manual transmission so I'll no longer have the torque converter. However I am going to sale my 5r110 and I don't want it damaged and I also don't want to sale something that could potentially not be right. So if you could please explain more in detail about the torque converter please?

If the converter shifts forward and disengages the input shaft they are very hard to get back in with the trans sitting horizontal.
The easy way to do it is with the trans pointing up so that you can hear each set of splines engage. Also part of the reason it
is so hard to get back in is that converter is very heavy without any fluid in it.

Pulled my motor with 1/2 ton hoist (2 ton fully extended). Had to remove the motor from the trans along with the turbo etc. in order to get it up and over the front bulkhead. Think I had to remove the belly pan and pick up tube as well IIRC.

Trans would be easier to pull out the bottom if you need to get it out. I left it in and re-installed the torque converter without issue.

that's about the weight of a 6.0 with trans. I wouldn't want to do that with a 2T hoist. I would separate motor and trans.
