Something Does Not Feel Right

Hello all,

The last 1 - 2 months the ABS light on my 2007 Escape XLT 3.0L automatic transmission would come on and the 4X4 light would flash intermittently. This might occur every few days and most of the time would disappear if I stopped / started the vehicle.

I had my a mechanic put it up on the lift so that he might take a look at the tone rings. They seemed intact and did not seem loose at all. What has been happening in the last week is that no indicator lights appears on my dashboard. But, I find that when I accelerate from a stopped position I tend to feel what I can best describe as slight vibration and faint rattling that seems to originate my shifter in the console area. I was on the highway yesterday maintaining a speed of 105km/hr and the vehicle felt / sounded normal.

Your thoughts and assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Peter

Are the fluids full, especially including the transmission?

How many miles on the spark plugs?

How many miles have you owned this vehicle?

Thank you for chiming in. All the best in the New Year.

I purchased the vehicle on July 01 of this year and it had 157,000KM (now at 163,000KM)
I checked the fluid levels a few days ago and all appears to be fine.
I have no idea how long the plugs have been in. I am no expert but the vibration that I am feeling does not seem to originate from the engine.

Since you’re noticing a vibration from the shifter, I’m guessing it’s a manual?

I’m a bit confused - you say the ABS light and 4x4 light come on, then you say there’s no indicator lights. Please clarify.

Even without indicator/warning lights, codes can be stored. If you’ve been seeing an intermittent ABS and flashing 4x4 light, I’d recommend having it checked for codes. You’ll need a code reader capable of reading ABS (chassis) codes - the dirt cheap ones only read power train codes so any ABS codes won’t be displayed.

Thank you for your input. It is an automatic transmission. Yes that is correct the ABS light and blinking 4WD light may come on every now and then but may not for days. I haven't seen either for the last several days. Whenever the lights would appear that is when the vehicle's ride would be feel rough. Lately, even when the lights do not appear the ride feels rough as well. As you said it may be wise to have the codes read.

It sounds like there is definitely a fault that’s causing the auto 4x4 to engage - the ABS light may be a result of that (or the inverse could be true).

There are plenty of cheap code readers available ($40 & up) for reading power train and ABS codes. Just search “OBD2 code reader with ABS” on Google, Amazon or eBay. Many chain parts and tool stores also carry them.

Don’t delay in checking them - the longer you drive it with this problem, the more likely it is that severe drive train damage could occur.

Check the driveshaft carrier bearing. Check the wheel hubs and bearings as well as the CV & U joints.

The situation may be getting worse. My wife and I had a few errands to run yesterday afternoon. When returning to the vehicle and starting it up I saw the solid ABS light and flashing 4FWD appear on at least 3-4 occasions. Driving off in that state was horrible. The vibration was so apparent that I had to pull off to the side of the road, shut off the vehicle, restart the vehicle and hope that the dashboard alerts were gone. Which they were in most cases. Only then could I drive off. Odd that the vibration would disappear once the warning lights were gone. Now that the Holidays are over I think that I will be heading straight to my mechanic. Thank you all for your input. Fingers crossed

Act One:

Just got back from seeing my mechanic. So far, it appears that both the center and rear driveshaft joints need to be replaced. Parts to arrive on Monday. So I'll be spending the weekend FWD only. No matter, as I have no plans to do any driving until Monday. The intermittent ABS light is another matter. Possibly a sensor as the tone rings seem fine. Stay tuned for
