My dad bought a used '16 Lariat with factory backup camera. The camera works fine, but the lens has some sort of pitting or texture on the outside so the image is grainy.
Anyone run across this before? Does anyone know if this lens is replaceable? The two other options I see are to attempt to polish the lens (like a cloudy headlight) or buy a new camera and emblem for ~$350.
My understanding is that the whole camera unit in back has to be replaced. Can buy a new camera and plug it in, but I think the dealer has to program it to actually work
I had a 2013 Taurus that the camera slowly degraded; more foggy over the years. Had the dealer replace it for about $650 if I recall. That was after researching if I could do it much cheaper myself.
You'd have to program adding in a camera that didn't exist before. But replacing an existing camera should be plug & play.
I'd try to clean then polish the lens first. If you are going to replace it, there is not really any harm in trying. Worst case you make it worse & have to replace it like you were already planning on.
