CEL Code P1405

I recently replaced all four of my CATs on my 97 5.0L. About a week later, the CEL came on again, this time the code is P1405. I know the code means DPF EGR Sensor Upstream Hose Off or Plugged. Also, when the code is pulled, it said 1 of 2 and 2 of 2. I just want to know what that means. I also have no idea what DPF EFR sensor is or what it does? Since the hose might be off or plugged, could it have been something the mechanic did when he replaced my CATs?

Thank you in advance

I just had this exact problem. Here's a diagram:

http://minivanmadness.com/pdf/files/...e%20system.pdf

On the 97 5.0 mountaineer the EGR valve is on the back of the engine on the passenger side. If you lift the hood you'll see it near the intake manifold on the passenger side of the engine. It's a little blackdisc that's fat in the middle and tapers out flatter on the eges (like a flying saucer). I'd say it's a little smaller than a compact disk. Near that you have to kind of look under some larger hoses to see the EGR tube where the upstream and downstream hoses are connected. I don't think you can see the DPFE sensor without taking some things apart a bit.

Basically my problem was that the upstream hose was not connected to the EGR tube so it was an easy fix (just put it back on) tho I think I need to replace that tube and it will be hard to get to the end thaat's connected to the sensor.

Basically the DPFE sensor measures the pressure across the flow control orifice and then uses that to decide how much or when to open the EGR valve to let exhaust into the intake.

Oh and I don't knw what the 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 means on the scanner. For me, for the fist one it said P1405 and for the second one it said the same code but with a "PD" next to it. No idea what that means

I think he meant 4 O2 sensors. There are not 4 catalytic converters.

The DPFE is differential pressure feedback EGR. Not sure the physical layout but in theory, there are 2 tubes, silicon rubber, that run to the EGR tube that feeds the intake from the exhaust. It operates off differential pressure as measured across an oriface which is in between these 2 ports on the EGR tube. If one of the lines falls off, the DPFE can measure exhaust flow and therefore the PCM can't regulate fuel flow through the injectors. Find the DPFE and make sure both tubes are still connected. They are 2 different diamters so you can't mix them up.

Ford issued a TSB on bad DPFE sensors not too long ago.. one on my 2002 went bad right after the TSB came out... it's toward the back of the engine compartment. Just go to your local Ford dealer, and tell 'em to give you another sensor.. I think your truck falls under the TSB... They can show you on their computer where it's located exactly.. do check the condition of the hoses (they can be plugged or bad as well), but I'd bet on the DPFE sensor.
