What is the part called for releasing the column shifter when the brake pedal is pushed. This is on a 2010 f150 with the 5.4L. Its on the wifes truck and she said she was pushing on the brake pedal today and the truck wouldnt shift out of park. It finally did shift but I would like to fix this issue soon. Thanks for any help.
Could you be asking about the shift interlock solenoid?
If you check it out, I believe there is a manual "override" button at the solenoid that will allow you to shift if it fails. Fairly easy to change, just tedious.

The procedure for both (column and floor shifters) is in the owner's manual.

Ask her if the wheels were turned into a curb or if parked on a hill. Sometimes when I do that I have to grunt the steering wheel a little to leave park. All 3 F150's I've owned did this.
Actually it is a floor shifter first of all. I started the truck when I got home and it wouldnt shift into gear. It is dark so I also noticed that the brake lights are not working either. Are these two items a connected issue? I went into the manual and found the section on the brake shift interlock. I checked the BSI fuse(#5). It is good. The #6 fuse is for turn signals and stop lamps. It is also good and the turn signals work. Is there something else I should check before buy a new BSI or is that about it.
Fix the brake light problem and you'll fix the shift interlock at the same time. The smart junction box requires a valid signal from the brake light circuit in order to release the interlock. If you need to move the truck, follow the interlock bypass instructions in the manual as already indicated as a temporary measure.
1. Check fuse F46 in the under the hood fuse box (BJB) and verify it is actually passing power.
2. Check mechanical adjustment of brake pedal position (BPP) switch to verify it is being "made" when the pedal is pressed.
3. Check that the BPP switch is actually passing power between pins 1 & 4 when pedal is pressed. Fuse F82 in the BJB should be HOT when pedal is pressed plus the high mount stop lamp should be on.
It ended up being the brake light switch. Since the brake lights werent working, i started on that end of the problem. Sometime they would work and sometimes they would not. So I put a new switch in, which didnt take a minute. The problem was solved and no calls from the wife today, which was even better. Thanks for the help members.
