Hey gang! I have a 96 Ford Explorer with a 6 CD changer located under the center armrest between the two front seats that no longer plays CD's. Anytime I try to play a CD the digital display reads "Bad CD". This is not an aftermarket CD player, but the original factory installed CD player from Ford. I have pulled the changer out to inspect it, but man what a complicated looking piece of equipment. Is it possible the optical/laser piece that reads the CD's is all gunked up, or are we talking new CD changer? I have tried playing a CD Cleaner, but it won't even read that. If it's only the optical/laser piece that needs to be cleaned, is there an easy way to get to it without taking the whole thing apart?
Thanks for any help.
My CD changer did the same thing. My delearship connections told me it was not worth fixing. So after years of putting up with skips and jumps, I decided having the darn thing in the console was a bad idea by Ford.
Our other non-Ford vehicle has a changer installed on the floor under a seat and it rarely ever skips. In the end, i felt my only option was to replace the entire radio system with something else in the dashboard. If yours is a JBL like mine, it required a little more work by the installer. I love the sound, but I really miss being able to put in 6 CDs and forgetting about it. I don't want to complain since my son surprised me with it for my birthday. Not much help for you, but this was my experience. Good luck!
I also have a 1996 Explorer XLT with a factory installed 6-CD changer in the center console that is skipping horribly now. I've noticed that my center console shakes very badly at around 70 mph. Anyone else having this problem? I'm now wondering if there is any hope in repairing the original changer, or even if I do, if the console shaking will just cause the problem again. Any recommendations on ...
1) repair how-to's for the original changer, or
2) good aftermarket changers that would be plug-n-play, or
3) recommendations on where better to install another changer other than the center console.
Also, has anyone heard, seen, or know how to properly brace the center console to eliminate the shaking at high speeds?
Thanks!
i think you may have to disasemble console to find out why loose.
i like these changers, plug and play. if not heard of them usaspec. www.premieraudio.com/usaspec.html.
most yards here want around $125
good luck
My 96 EB says NO CD on the display. It also says CD E1. It will not play any CD or eject the 6 disk cartridge. Any ideas? Is this the same problem? If a cheap fix is found, please post it.
I too am having this problem, I just picked up a 97 explorer last week and finally got around to putting some discs in the 6 disc player.
I put three in and pushed CD, it skipped through the first spots and then picked one to play, it played the first song and I decided that I wanted a different disc when I hit skip it said NO DISC.
Since then, that is all it will say and it won't eject the discs.
I didn't read the manual and paniced that I put the discs in backwards or something. My question is, is there a way to get the discs back out and will it ever play again?
