Blower fan not working

Something seems to break every week these days.

I have no heater/AC fan, it’s rather inconvenient for a lot of reasons.

Additionally, I had frost on the INSIDE of my windshield this morning. Windows were closed. Truck has been sitting a couple weeks through several snowstorms.

Thoughts on the blower fan?

Well, start with fuse, connections at fan...passenger side firewall. Check for power, corrosion and a tight fit. Does it not work on any settings? Then check the switch at the HVAC controls. If you change the motor change the relay (right Next to it).

The frost in the cab is moisture, look for water intrusion around windshield, under dash etc.

Tap on the motor housing while the switch is on high. If it does anything replace the motor. Then do ^^ what Colorado suggests.
If the fuse is good and there is no power at the blower with the switch in hi and key on, check for power to and from the resistor, then the switch.

What year was your truck?

Kind of reminds me of the days of my old VW Beetle.

If you have a fuseblock under the hood it should be fuse #23, 40a. That fuse should have 12v+ all the time.
There is a fuse for the relay under the dash, #22 that should have power when the key is on.
Also, it looks like the switch on the dash provides ground to the blower via the resistor.
So, Key on Fan on (any speed) you should have 12v on one of the wires at the blower. If no power suspect one of the Fuses, switch or relay.
If you have power and ground at the wires to the blower suspect the blower.
If you have 12v at blower but don't have ground suspect the resistor or switch.

If your truck is newer and doesn't have an underhood fuseblock the fuses will be different, but I believe the rest of the system is the same.

I know this one. Go ahead and replace the blower motor and the thermistor (of course there's a name for it but OK). Neither are very expensive but it's a guaranteed fix.

OK I just checked, it's the blower motor resistor. Only like 15ish bucks.

If the fan works on high only its probably the resistor It's right under the blower motor. But I replaced both while I was in there

Thanks fellas.

So it’s a 2000 model. The frost is odd as I’ve never had any interior moisture issues before, especially being so dry here in CO. My initial thought was water is leaking in somewhere and also corroding fan wires or that something else got wet. I did just have like 16” of snow sitting on the truck melting off for weeks.

The blower does not work on any setting. I have read that this could be the resistor, does that sound right? I’ll have to get out the multimeter and do some troubleshooting.

I'd say that anything is possible but typically, when the resistor goes bad the fan runs on high only and turns off when anything else is selected.

Yeah, resistor usually looses one speed at a time and high still works, not all speeds gone at once.

I have seen moisture build up on the inside of the windshield when I allowed snow to sit on mine. Now I clean the snow off as fast as possible knowing the moisture leaking down behind the dash can cause problems.

know how you feel though. Can’t keep mine on the road for more than a day lately it seems like before something else quits.

Coming from owning so many Toyotas (including many very high mileage ones) this truck has been a real departure from what I consider reliable.

I haven’t troubleshot anything but hopped in it today and everything is dry... AND THE FAN WORKS

Shelving this one for now...

it might be an intermittent problem but that often is the warning it is getting ready to be a more permanent one.

Older Japanese built stuff from the 80’s 90’s and early 2000’s was generally a notch above American built vehicles IMO. Newer vehicles I don’t think that is quite as much the case but these trucks are 90’s Ford engineering though no matter how cool the engine is. A modern Ford is a totally different animal from what they were building 20-25 years ago.

Start shopping for a blower motor. Could be a relay issue as well.
