At what point do you need to install the high idle mod on these trucks? Sometimes I wait in line to get the kid for about 45 minutes a few days a week. There are also time Ill grab something to eat and take my break in my truck. I cant see my truck idling for more than 45-60 minutes at any given time.
From my research there is nothing to worry about. Ford ran these diesels 3 months straight in freezing cold temps during testing. I plan to snow plow with mine this winter and it will be idling 4-8 hours at any given time.

All of my trucks have had Fast idle. Not sure what drove the train as I have heard a lot of stories but I do know that way up N and across the oil fields where trucks are in use 24 x7 the high idle is installed. I use it because the truck will auto shut down around 30 min or so and not good enough for my 4 dogs that are in the back seat on a S Tex hot day.
I have told the reason for the auto shut down is at idle the engine does not run efficiently and you can get "cylinder wetting" which is a build-up of unburned hydrocarbons (diesel fuel) in the cylinders and it dilutes the oil...or so I was told...it does make sense!
I am one of those guys that needs his truck to high idle for extended periods in extremely cold temps like -40C. Last year, the truck did a great job just using its automatic high idle which revs it up to about 1100rpm. However, I did install the the high idle mod this year to get it up to 1200ish rpm using an upfitter switch and e-brake. Did I need it? I don’t think so but I was bored and like to tinker. Lol. If I didn’t need it for northern canadian oilfield work, you won’t need it for picking up the kids or eating Mc Ds. You don’t need it unless you like to tinker around like me. 😀
I have not installed on my 2017 I picked up Dec 2016 yet. Just yesterday, -15 C in the am, truck went into high idle when I parked at work before I shut it down. About 1200 rpm. The colder it gets the higher it will go, the more fuel it burns. But if you need the heat, or you need cooling on a job site I would think it’s useful. When demanding cooling and charging devices, charge protect will also idle it up some, but it won’t be burning efficiently for really long idle times. DPF will be plugging up, idling is the worst for this, you will see more regens. Might want to be able to do a manual regen stationary on occasion. I have to do mine, just because, I have the stickers for my Upfitter made, and I like this type of thing. But I also need my auxiliary diesel tank pump going for long trips and idle times.
