The 4wd stopped shifting, Goes into 4wd but won't disengage . Rapping from the passenger side kick plate. Tried a second motor, same problem. It's my '01 and winter has reared its ugly head. Did the check on this problem and the search here didn't help, so help!
40 reads & no replies, so I'll see if I can get things started until the cold country 4wd guys chime in. Will it come out of 4wd if its in a garage that's above freezing???

Alas, no. New motor and still won't shift out of 4wd
OK, use, borrow, or come by the ELM scan tool & running FORScan diagnostic freeware that's tweaked for Fords on the viewing device of your choice as discussed here, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html
This inexpensive, but powerful diagnostic combo can query / scan All of the vehicle computer / controllers for trouble code clues. Then post up All pending or set trouble code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot.
You try turning the shaft with pliers? Obviously the shift motor needs to be taken off to try it. Maybe siezed up enough that the motor can't overcome it or you have a problem inside the case.
The truck will go into 4x but won't go back to 2x w/o removing the motor and manually putting it back. Mechanic thinks it might be the control behind the passenger kickplate. The fun continues and I've spent the last few day dealing with the 32" of snow that's fallen. I still have the old Mazda for local driving but we don't trust it to go 15mi to Marquette with no rear brakes. I'll offer more info as I get it.
Fore the sake of closure, I left it in 4x4 and took it back to my mechanic because the front end was whining. Pinion bearing was failing on the front drive so I drove it back home parked it, dropped the tags and ins. on it, enough is enough.Deal with it come spring when I put it on the market cheap.
