I have a 90 Bronco II Eddie Bauer 4WD with manual transmission. This week I started experiencing resistance when backing up and it feels like the car is in 4WD which it is not. When driving forward, the sensation of 4WD continues until occassionally a loud pop occurs and it feels like 4WD disengages. I am still able to engage 4WD with the button but am concerned that it seems to be doing so on its own. Any suggestions?

I've experienced this same thing on mine. I would put it in 4WD and do whatever, then put the t-case in 2H, but still feel that heaviness until the "pop" and it came out of 4H. In my case, I had mismatched tires which caused enough drivetrain windup to make it difficult for the t-case to disengage. One thing I'm not clear on in your case: Is it doing this out of the blue, or after you've had it in 4WD and shifted it back into 2H? In either case, check for something that would cause binding in the drivetrain. You indicate that you have an electric shift t-case, if it's shifting on it's own, check the wiring to the shift motor and the shift motor itself to see if something funny is going on.
Thanks for the input. No, I haven't engaged the 4WD. It just seems to engage itself, usually when I first start the car and back out of my parking place. The 4WD light doesn't come on and I'm not pushing the button to turn it on. I'll check the wiring at your suggestion. Any other ideas, I'd appreciate more input. Thanks.
