Sitting in traffic the other day and started to notice the smell of burning plastic as well as noticing smoke coming from what appeared to be the steering column. Once I was able to get to a safe place away from everyone I tore into the steering column to investigate this issue. I have not torn the steering column all the way apart just yet because I noticed that the wire from the brake light switch is completely fried!! Have replaced connector by the pedal which I believe is the relay, have the part to replace the switch but im not 100% sure if I need to chase the melted wire back to the source/or to where its good, or just run a new wire from the switch. Anyone know where exactly this wire goes from the switch? Im having a l very difficult time with locating it and it seems as if removing the entire dash is goin to be easiest to chase down the smoked wire.
If the wire was lightgreen/red, that wire goes to the fuse box brake light fuse. If the wire is lightgreen, that is the wire that leaves the switch and goes to the multi-function switch, the cruise control box, and the RABS box.

The RABS box? Ill be sure to look into this, I was under the assumption that the brake light fuse had something to contribute to this fiasco since the day it went up in smoke I could not shift from park to drive. Once I figured out that the shifter was also tied to the same fuse I was sure to reload on fuses. every time I would tap the brake the fuse would blow. Even thought if I just used a bigger amped fuse it would be fine, blew those as well. both wires from the switch are toast and im not sure how far up the harness their fried. surely its back far enough that I won't be able to solder a new piece in lol. ill see about finding the multi function switch you mentioned and go from there. thanks!
The multi-function switch is what Ford calls the turnsignal switch. That is how your brake lights in the rear are fed. Your bigger fuses are what probably hurt the wire. But things happen sometimes.
