Look up under the dash at the steering column. There is a screw that typically works loose making the shift sequence sloppy. If it came out...hopefully if so the screw would be on the floor board...then I can see your scenario. If not, then a cable probably broke.

took plastic piece off top of steering column .
theres a grey potmetal piece that runs from gearshift lever diwn the steering column.
i can see its broken in half?
