Shift lever disengaged
Have a 77 F150. The auto shift lever (on column) has been getting looser and now it will not go into any gear when you move the lever from P R N D L it just moves smooth througout the range and will not go into any gear. The truck apppears to be stuck in N or between gears as you can roll it back and forth. How big a job is it to fix this? Is there a cable system in there? If so to fix it do you have to take out the steering column? All suggestions appreciated

Shorty Start by checking your shift collar this the part your shifter is attached to. These are noted for breaking and not hard to change. You will have to remove the steering wheel and upper column parts to get at it. If it is not broke then you will need to pull the column the culprit then most likely is the shift tube. This connects your shift collar to the lever at the base of the column. It should have a key spot welded one on both ends and these some times break off. Both of these parts should be available thru your local parts house.
