I've been running two 4.9 sixes for a while now, one bone stock, one modified, (cam, porting, 3" exhaust). Hot rodding the six is an uphill battle, mainly due to the existence of the 302. All the good parts are limited production, or out of production & rare as hens teeth, the head design is poor at best, and little can be done to correct that. It has its good points like; 7 main bearings and loads of torque down low. The 302 on the other hand has anything you might want available, in quantity, with millions of motor heads having already tried any conceivable combination. I'll likely shop for a small block in my next truck, if it is disappointing as bought, it will be a walk in the park to warm it up a bit. A friend just bought an explorer 5.0 engine with the P heads and GT40 intake for $200.
If my 300 ever dies it will get rebuilt stock except with a r/v cam to fully take advantage of the stroke. I’m sure with the pollution delete at that time too that my fuel mileage will increase.

I heard Chevy 250 rockers do something good for the 300. You could have the head ported and polished.
then swap MAF if you don’t already have, might be cool.
