i have a 300 I-6/c5 engine/trans combo but the engine is screaching like somethin in the heads is screwed should i try and fix the heads or just swap in a different motor if i should just go for the motor what is the easiest swap(i have an 89 f150 and i would like to stay with efi)
Your easiest swap is to replace like for like (I6 for I6), however, it is a lot more fund to drop a 302 or 351 in there instead of that nice little 6. I would say the swap from 6 to 8 is difficult, but definately doable. I'm not a mechanic (grew up on a farm where we kept everything running with bailing wire and twine) but I was still able to make the swap from my 300 I6 to a 351W (and I love it!!!). I just took it slow and asked a lot of questions (especially on this forum).
I think that you can use a 300 out of any year (with in reasion), just use your intake, exhaust, and ignition. All you need is the long block and head-right?
Also on the subject of 302 swaping, if the 302 is stock I think you would be disappointed in the lack of performance increase compared to the 300, there is more potental in the 302 but for a driver I like the 300 better. Most people who recomend 302 swaps never owned a 300 and if they did it was a poor example. I had a 300 in a '81 4x4 but my parents said I should buy one with a V8 so I sold it and got a '85 that is just like it but has a 351, I am pretty sure that the 300 would beat it and even if it wouldn't the 300 was the smoothest running engine I have yet owned, I have never known one to leak ANY oil, and my 351 leaks everywhere (for now) and is idling very rough.
>>The 300 might be one of Fords
>best engines, ever!
I'd say it was one of the best engines Ford ever built.....I've heard of 300's that have gone 400,000-500,000 miles before needing an overhaul....I've got an 88 F150 with 130,000....doesn't burn a drop, but it does have a rear main leak....big deal....now if only I could find a way to get rid of that crappy Mazda 5 speed that sit's behind it....
I liked my 300 a lot, but it leaked all over the place and was pretty wore out at 100K even with good care!!! I swapped in my 351W and love it! Another guy from Houston swapped in a 302 from a 300 and likes his also. All things, being equal, there is no way a 300 will beat up the 302 or 351, however, you can get a lot of neat aftermarket stuff for the 300 as well as the 302 and 351 and while you might beat one of them off the line for the first 30 feet, there is no way you will stay with them over an 1/8 mile. The 300 will probably pull as well as the 302, but it can not maintain the RPMs that you can get with the shorter cranks in the V-8s. The 300 is a great engine and matches really well with a hard working Ford truck, but if you really want the muscle, you gotta get 8 cylinders.
Very well put Slik, my 302HO seems to run better every day except for the starter that is. I never could get the 300/6 to ever run this smooth. really nice at 80mph, can't hear the engine at all, I guess it hits a harmonic or the sound is completely left behind. That dang 6 (Imust have gotten a lemon) allways struggled it's butt off to get to 65mph, I couldn't see giving the local Ford dealer $1200 to fix it. (that's thier estimate)
By the way, I found out that the AOD in the 83 lincoln will work in the truck, it had been rebuilt 2000 miles ago! When I get that in I'll save alot of gas on the freeway.

new mini hi-torque Ford starter should be here in a few days.......
i don't know what you would do if you wanted to stay with a manual but i switched mine from a mazda 5 to a c6 and the only problem i have is the spedometer shows 8 miles fast and when checking the tranny fluid it is hard to get to
I got a C6 that worked great, but it has 100K on it and I would probably take the time to overhaul before dropping it in. I would let you have it for $50 plus shipping.
That's something else I was thinking of....throwing an automatic in the truck. Now it is a 4X4....my biggest concern is setting up a shifter in there....would have to be floor mounted...If I can put a B&M or Hurst shift in there, and make it work easy enough, I'd do it....I'm making it into a plow truck anyway.....maybe I can make some money off the damn thing for what it's soaked me in repairs over the last 5 years...ehehehehhehe
Silk, like I said the 302 and 351 has more potential, also I never raced the 300 vs my 351, I sold the 81 with the 300 months before I got the '85 I have now with the 351. But I know the owner maybe we will try it some time......
I would like to mention that my neighbor has a 81 2x4 with a 302, its crank moved in and out a half a inch (it has over 240,000 miles) so we were going to replace it, about that time I got my '81 and the 300s power impressed him so much that he said that if we find a good 300 before a good 302 he would swap in a 300! (we did find a good running 302 with 64,000 miles for $100 so that never happened though, but even though the new engine is semi rebuilt and has headers he still says my old 300, 4x4 was faster)
With the mazda trany, I don't think they are that bad, I have a Explorer with a mazda 5 speed and I beat the living !@#$ out of it and the thing still shifts like new.
Does anyone know if the 351 in my '85 4x4 would accept a AOD easly? I have a c-6 ( I assume) now.
I love the look of a 240-300 with a Offy intake, split street rod header, and chrome valve cover. I know someone who had a '78 long bed 2x4 with a 300 and a C-4, it had over 150,000 miles on it and he installed all that stuff along with a relitivly BIG cam, a 600 Holley double pumper, jacobs ignition and he built the c-4 with a manual valve body and ratchet shifter, he ran consistent low-13s it the 1/4 mile, although he did send a rod through the block after a short time, it still shows that with a little better breathing the 300 runs higher rpms to. Sounded cool to, but it still didn't have the V8 sound.
Thanks Slik....I'd of done it but I found a C-6 at a yard pretty cheap with only 68,000....I figure with the shipping it would have cost quite a bit, not to mention I don't know if UPS or any of the other carriers would handle something that heavy....Lemme know if you have anything else though that I might need for this swap I'm doing....Thanks again....Phil
It would have to be freight-shipped and then you would probably have to get it overhauled on top of that. I'm going to try and get around to polishing the housing and then either overhauling it and swap it back in my truck or selling it at a car show.
Good luck!
Oh, I'm not sure I believe the 300 running low 13's in the 1/4, but I guess anything is possible. It would take 450-500 horses and a monstor hookup on the rearend to get it down the lane that quick. Was he running NOS? And, if you try and run it at the high RPMs that the V-8s run, then you will throw all sorts of things out of the bottom like the rod you mentioned. That type of driving gets expensive fast!! I'll stick to my 351W and watch the rods fly out the sides of those 300s as they try to keep up with me.
I really don't know if he had No2 but I think the only reasion he threw a rod was the milage on the stock lower end. Haven't you ever seen one of those rail jobs built in the 70s with a 300, three 2bbls and 6 chrome straight pipes? Some even ran superchargers! Some of the N/As run 9s! That is why Ford Motorsport carries that aluminum head for race use.
