Tmp sensor. Are there two possible sensors?

Gent's, I have a 1997 7.3 power stroke F350 which has a temp gauge that isn't registering. Previous owner replaced the unit and still had no luck. I replaced with sender (OReilly part number MPT 2-8331) because visually it matched what was on there but again, no joy. It may very well be that the previous owner got the wrong sending unit and I simply replicated his error. Anyway, things got busy and I left this particular problem for another day because most of my driving is done close to home. Now I have a trip coming up where a working temp gauge would be a very good thing to have and I'm stumped. The temp gauge is working by the way.

I would like to add that at some point I got some additional info that there were two possible sensors for gauge packages on this year model. Or perhaps they meant one was for gauges and others for idiot lights. Not sure. Naturally, I have forgotten where I got that info so I can't go back to it. What I did do is, I popped back into OReilly's hoping to get whatever alternative sensor they listed but again, no joy. What they show has no information regarding Ohms. I remember this much for sure. The two possible sensors for this year model of truck worked at two vastly different Ohm ranges.

So, if you have any hard info on this (not speculation), I'd appreciate hearing from you about it.

Kindest regards,
M3A1

Interested in this answer as well, my temp gauge on a 95 7.3 is barely registering (say about 3/8" from the far left) when the engine is hot.

There is the gauge sender and the overheat switch down on front of engine below the alternator. They look rather similar. I am wondering if you didn't get an overheat switch instead of a gauge sender maybe.

What temp tho is "hot"? You should get a infared temp gun to verify that the engine is actually getting up to temp.

These engines have such a large cooling system that it's easy for them to overcool and not actually be a gauge problem. I only say this as a caution so you don't waste time on a gauge that works fine but a system that just needs a thermostat possibly.
