Is it necessary to upgrade or update the fuel filters and or the housing? Like the one form H and S. I always stick with Motorcraft filters not sure if that effects anything. Thanks.

Motorcraft Fuel filters only as the DFCM (diesel fuel conditioning modules) aka fuel pump/fuel filter/water separator is a pretty good unit. An upgrade, IMHO, would be to supplement the factory set up with an aftermarket air fuel separation unit to offer more filtration and rid the fuel of entrained air in the fuel.

What's your main concern?
X's 2! I recently added a tool box/fuel tank combo to the bed of my F-250. I added a simple inline fuel filter with 3/8 inlet and outlet to protect the Carter fuel pump for the aux tank, followed my a marine Fuel Filter/Water Separator. I only fill the auxiliary tank now. Is it overkill? Yes. But having 4 filters along with a large visual indicator for any contaminents helps me sleep better at night.

have you ever captured water in the water trap?
Im reading up on this and apparently for 99 thru 2016 these between tank and engine water capture systems work....but apprently...for 2017 and later, they dont work. in 2017 and later the pump is in the tank which results in the fuel leaving the tank as part of a push process instead of a pull process in 2016 and earlier. the water traps work when used in pull systems but not push systems.
I ran across a used KSH toolbox/fuel tank combo pretty close to where I lived. It’s an aluminum 45 gallon tank, so it gives me around a 1k mile range now if I’m empty. I really love being able to be more selective about where and how much I pay for diesel now. I’ve seen as much as a .60 cent per gallon difference between stores no more than 5 miles apart. It sits completely flush with the bed rails and is still able to fit all of my work tools. I used a T with an inlet and outlet from ATTA tank that splices into the factory vent line. The tank has a sending unit, so I hooked a fuel gauge up in my center console. I wired the pump to my #1 aux switch. If I’m around a 1/4 tank, it takes about 10 minutes to fill my tank. If I forget to turn the pump off, the T simply reverts the overflow back through the return line to the aux tank.

any input would be helpfuel
So far I’ve only ran two full tanks through those filters. I saw a little bit of trash accumulate in the smaller inline filter. When I bought the tank, it had been sitting for awhile. I emptied out the old diesel as best I could and saw some small bits of trash in it. I haven’t seen any water in the fuel/water separator, nor my factory fuel bowl. I was emptying it about once a month. Luckily down here in Texas, diesel trucks run amuck so there is very little chance at finding any stale or standing diesel at any fuel stations. The fuel water separator uses a 30 micron pleated paper filter to change any water particles into large enough droplets that will fall by gravity to the bowl. Regardless of whether it’s pushing or pulling fuel. I’m referring to the marine fuel/water separator I installed of course.
