ICP Sensor Replacement Repair Tip

1997 with 330,000 miles has been surging slightly for about a year driving me nuts. At first I thought it was the torque convertor slipping, but it turned out to be the sensor. The original OEM sensor has a 5/8" nut on the underside of the sensor. I tried a clawfoot wrench but it was too thick to fit under the sensor and in the "well" of the head. The only way I could get it out was to create my own 90 degree wrench from an old cheap box wrench. (See picture below). I ground it down a bit, heated it with a MAP torch in a vice, and hit/tapped it with a 5lb hammer until it was a 90 degree angle. "New tool" worked like a charm with a long extension through the closed end of the wrench. Based on advice on this forum I bought the Motorcraft part, F6TZ9F838A, which replaces the 5/8" underside nut with a 1 1/16" nut on top of the sensor. Truck is running like new, and not bad for 22 years old.

Innovative tool. I usually use a large pair of vise grips on it. It will definitely damage the sensor, but I plan to replace it so damage is not a concern
