What do you know about power steering pumps

My 2-1/2 year old Motorcraft reman power steering pump gave up the ghost tonight. I've checked all the local parts stores, Amazon, Rock Auto, Summit Racing, White Bear Lake and Ficmrepair and it doesn't look like anyone has a new, brand name pump. Ficmrepair doesn't specify new or reman for their Motorcraft part, but $180 including core is about what I paid for my reman at Rock Auto. So my options for new are:

Autozone - Duralast $135.99 https://www.autozone.com/suspension-...77290_0_240781
OReilly - New Advantage $187.99 https://www.autozone.com/suspension-...77290_0_240781
Napa - Cardone $157.99 https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NNQ8...+steering+pump

Any feedback on your experiences, sources, or the above parts is greatly appreciated.

They all, including Motorcraft, suck. And I don't mean fluid.

There's that beacon of optimism I recall from this morning's thread.

So I should get the cheapest available with a lifetime warranty or what?

Why is it that I can get a new Motorcraft pump for a 7.3L but not a 6.0L?

In my best Sidney Poitier, "Call me Mr. Sunshine".

You probably don't even know what I'm talking about .......

After two Motorcraft, I think they design in the whine so you don't fall asleep driving.

Is that from "Lillies of the Field"?

No whine from mine, just screeching and popping. I was waiting for it to grenade all the way home. No lack of steering or braking performance, however.

I guess I'm going for the Autozone option. I can pick it up tomorrow and I have a $20 points discount.

In the heat of the night.

I think it's a toss up what to get. Best deal for you.

One good thing about Autozone is, they're just about everywhere if you need to warranty it.

Weak azz pumps for such a big vehicle. If a man would machine some stout billet pumps with stainless lines he would make some money.
I am upgrading my hydroboost fittings and lines with larger, less restrictive components from Sweeting’s. Brakes and power steering are a conglomerate on these trucks.
Here is a recent email from Matt regarding options:

This is something I do regularly for the 99-05 ford 3/4 and 1 tons, so the hose kit would have all those little pieces in it. It would be banjos on the pump outlet, both booster high pressure ports, and a more conventional fitting for the box that has more flow than the stock piece. It also comes with fresh low pressure hose and hose clamps for the low pressure side. There is also an all stainless braid hose kit that puts high pressure stainless braid hose and fittings on the low pressure side, which is overkill, but sometimes overkill is fun.

There isn't much of any modifying to the booster, but if you would like a fresh one (lifetime is about 100,000 to 200,000 miles - same as the master), the price is included:

Booster: $475 new
Hose kit: 2 stainless braid 2 rubber $265, 4 stainless braid $369
shipping: $25

Since installing a Magnefine filter in my system, about a month ago, I feel something like a slight feedback in from my brake pedal. When I first tap my brakes there is a slight bounce back that I think is new. Everything works as before but curious if this is common?

Despite the filter, usually a sign that the hydrobooster is failing, debris gets caught in the valving.

Try removing the filter.

I know they don't work if you leave that little black cap on the intake tube.

Not necessarily. What was the reason you put the filter on in the first place?

This was the TSB from 2007, page 2 is not important.

It was supposed to be temporary, but many of us installed them permanently. Either in the post steering gear lines, the return lines, or in the hydroboost return line. The hydroboost return line only flows when the brake pedal is released from a stop, so it's a very weak bypass filtering method, and it catches things after they have gone through the hydroboost. So if something is going to get caught in the HB valving, it will be the first filtering stage. The added filter will catch the things going through it.

Ford I don't remember giving official capacities for the PS system, but right now I have both my original '03 reservoir (still attached) and the '05+ reservoirs, which appear much bigger and have a filter screen.

I installed the Magnefine in the return line on my 05 and never had a bit of problem. I also flushed the system every two years since new as with the brake system also. Flush, not the filter on the brakes.
