Okay gents,
I need your help. 2007 Ford F-350 King Ranch PSD 4X4 with 240,000 miles. I am having a problem about every 10 starts. Very sluggish starting about 1 in 10 times. Just had to get a jump, let the truck run for about an hour, seems fine. Does this truck have an ignition module on it or should I just change the starter? I have had it bulletproofed and replaced batteries, and alternator. Had the truck for almost 6 years and 185,000 miles. Never changed the starter. What words of wisdom can you folks put on me? Thank you in advance.
Your description isn't clear. Is it cranking slow? Does it crank a long time before starting? Does it run rough after the start for a few minutes? FWIW, there is no ignition module. The cop's are fired by the ecm and depend on signals from crank/cam sensors.
Now if you are having intermittent crank issues then it would be wise to check battery and all connections to battery including frame ground. If it is a hard start issue I would be replacing spark plugs and fuel filters. Be more specific with your questions and we can help better.
I would perform a voltage drop test on both the positive battery cable as well as the negative cable. You will need a digital voltmeter to perform this test. It is very easy to do and you can quickly learn how by doing a quick YouTube search.
About 1 time in 10, it will crank slow. Drives me nuts. I had to get a jump on a job site. Let the truck run for a long time. Every time since, fired fine. Driving me nuts!!! Got almost 240,000 miles. Drove back to Mobile from Manassas, VA yesterday. Flawless trip. Fired strong EVERY time I started it. We will see today.
