Hello,
I just picked up a 1969 F-250 Ranger. It has a 390fe motor which is the original motor according to the previous owner and auto transmission 2bbl carb. I haven't been able to verify the motor since I cannot find any casting #'s on the block. The valve covers have 5 bolts so its possible its a 390. The truck was used locally only twice in the last 2 years so its been sitting for a while. The distributor has been upgraded at one point to an electronic distributor
The problem I'm having is after the truck is warmed up and shut down, it will not crank again. When I turn the key I don't even get a click. The first time this happened I drove about 5 miles to get some gas. After my fill up I could not start the truck. Turn the key and its as if I have a completely dead battery. After waiting approx. 10 minutes it cranked but just barely enough to start up again. Sounded as if it had a low battery , but it does not. This has happened several more times after a warm engine. I verified my battery is fully charged and I have power to the rest of the truck. If the truck is cold, It has no problems cranking and no sign of not having enough power to turn over. I have replaced a few items to possibly resolve this issue among others. New items are
voltage regulator
starter solenoid
ignition coil
both battery cables
Ignition module ( my only #'s so far is D8VE 12A199 A2B ) from this part.
Anyone have an idea what may be causing this or what my next step should be? My first post here, I'm sure I left out some info that could help. Any help would be appreciated.
will it crank if you jump it across the solenoid terminals? if so, could be your ignition switch. if not, i'd suspect the distributor wiring or the module, or a near-dead fusible link.
Be sure your grounds are good to frame/engine. sometimes its just cleaning up your grounds where they are bolted to on frame and engine. might need to replace. possible quick trick is to use your jumper cables from battery ground to engine or frame. this is a quick troubleshoot and see if it will start up. if it starts up you more than likely have a bad ground and work your problem in that direction. if not look at other reccomendations mentioned above.

Went to start up this morning and was still completely dead. Jumped the solenoid and it cranked. Im off to find a ignition switch and see how that goes.
I checked the ground cables again and they are new and clean to the frame.
Thanks for the tips. I ll post after a new ignition switch and if that eliminates the problem.
Installed a new ignition switch and it started right up. I thought everything was fine until I decided to go for a short drive. Pulled into the driveway and shut the motor off. When to start it again and I'm back with the same problem ! I get nothing while turning the key. I jump it at the solenoid and it starts. So I guess im down to wiring which I know little to nothing about, or the starter is overheating somehow? Ill try and start it up in the morning while its cold. Im leaning towards wiring. Ive seem a good amount of corrosion already and overall appearance looks really worn down.
i think you've nailed it down to wiring. if the starter was overheating (my initial thought), then jumping the starter solenoid wouldn't make a difference.
start checking the wiring between the solenoid and the ignition switch...
