cold hard start

88 f150 302 to start the truck I turn the key on about 5 times and run the pump. The truck will start and than surges during idle and dies. It almost acts like fuel starvation. Replaced plugs cap rotor. Replaced fuel pressure regulator it tested marginal. I can now start the truck in two turns of the key but still dies. Once the truck is warm it runs and idles fine. This is a cold start only. I have checked for codes and there aren't any. I have claeaned the tb without effect. does this truck have an idle valve? Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Check fuel pressure.
Check for vacuum leaks, EGR and PCV.
Temp sensor?
Sudden onset or developed over time?

remove, clean and replace the IAC valve ( Cigar looking object with two wires )on the side of the TB. Do this first, as it is a common problem.

This problem has been gradually getting worse over about 3 months time. The fuel pressure ko was 50 psi. My book said this was the minimum so I replaced the fuel pressure regulater. I will try suggestions and get back with you. Thanks

Replaced the IAC,and cleaned the EGR. This had no effect o the problem. Checked the codes and didn't get any. The system gave me 11. Why does the truck idle so well when the code tester is pluged in. i checked for vacum leaks again with propane with no result. New plugs wires cap and rotor. I am obviously looking in the wrong place any suggestions.

50 psi for fuel pressure with key on, or even at idle is WAY high!!! Should be closer to somewhere between 35-39. You may want to check the pressure again while it is cold idling, and see if it fluctuates and jumps. Have you tried pulling the vacuum hose off of it, and smelling gas or not?

Good Luck

Luke
