tommorow afternoon ( friday the 10th) i start my latest project on my 70 f250 cs. i plan on removing the front clip so i can get the old cracked exhaust manifolds off and replace them with some old not cracked ones. I also have to pull my steering gear box to replace the seals. I read on here that there is only 8 total bolts to pull to have the clip come off once you pull the rad. the 3 on each side of the inner fender support rail and the ones up by the rad. I looked and it seems there are the ones that hgold the fender to the cab too, so i guessed there are more then 8. looking at my manifolds and everything else, i am seeing this as the only way to really get it done the easiest. i got the tools, i got help but i have no torch, so removing the old rusted bolts might be a pain.
Has anyone else removed the front clip on a 70 cs ? what was it like, i know this is a demanding project for 1 weekend, but it is my last free weekend for some time and i got to get it done, so any advice would be helpfull.
You and a friend can have it off in an hour or so. Remove the hood too unless you have about 4 people to lift. The core support bolts are the ones that always give me trouble, they tend to be down in a pit of rust and dirt. I usually used a half inch impact with an extension on the top and a friend or vice grips on the bottom. I like your way of thinking though, and it seems like an easy answer to a sometimes stickey problem.
I took my front clip off and replaced the inner fenders and the radiator support so I had everything appart. Having a little difficulty getting things to line up nicely. Any suggestions?
i would love to replace evrything while i am doing this, but you know what that leads too. Might as well change this while i at it, then , well as long as i am changing that i should go ahead and change these, then 3000 dollars and 6 weeks later you finally go put it back togather and you forgot to do what you started out to do and there goes another weekend doing the first thing again lol. i am hoping to just get the old manifolds off and get them replaced and to fix the seals in the gearbox and put it back togather. but hmmm might as well look for that thing hmmmmm
If you are only removing the front clip to replace or work on the engine I think it'd be easier to just pull the engine. Yes, the front clip is'nt that hard to remove but getting it back on and lined up right can be a pain. If you have help you could have the hood off and engine out in about the same time and have the benifit of working on it with it sitting on an engine stand.
My 2 cents

If the manifold are crack already Just take a chiesl and hammer and bust up the old manifold , they come apart easy and aftear they are gone the you might have a chance to still remove bolt.
well i took the clip off took me two hours, hardest was the the frame mounts, they just didnt want to let go, snap snap, but hey they are easy to replace. the 8 bolt thing just didnt apply to my cmper special, there were 14 bolts including the fender straps, but i got it off. tommorow i go to junk yard to find a steering gear box, mine is shot and no one has parts. so got to go find another. i have a 70 f250 will most work or not, i have ps factory.
I think the steering box will work up to 79. I have used them off a 75. One thing about a junkyard box is that the truck lived long enough to get to the junkyard it may be as worn out as the one you have. I have gotten mostly good ones but it is worth considering just getting a reman.
well got one manifold changed , decided to wait two weeks and do the other. nice only have a leak on on side of the truck now lol. got a good gearbox outa a 70 something or other, working fine. getting the clip on was easy. it lined up perfect, wasnt a bad thing afterall.
