E4OD questions

Ok I have to put this thread here since I can't find any specific transmission sub-forums around the site, so here goes.

I have a 1998 F150 ECLB 2wd with a 2v 5.4 and an E4OD behind it. The transmission is taking a while to shift into 2nd and shifting hard sometimes, so I'm thinking the TCC clutch and some other stuff internal to the transmission needs replacing, so it's time for either a rebuild or replacement.

I've found somebody local that has a recently rebuilt E4OD out of a 4wd, complete with xfer case for sale for a very reasonable price. I know the bell housing will work since this transmission is out of a 5.4 truck already, but I'm skeptical about how much work would be involved in converting the 4wd unit to work in a 2wd truck. At first, I thought it would just be a matter of pulling the transfer case off and putting a 2wd rear housing on it, but the more I read, the more I think the internal output/tail shaft would have to be swapped out, which would mean tearing the WHOLE transmission down to get to it. Is this the case, or is it easier?

Hey Chris71, while I can't help with the output/tail shaft issue, I will chime in about the E4OD. My son's 1998 had the E4OD. I went through 2 differeant builders until I found someone who actually fixed the problem.

Trans went out when it spit out the front seal and emptied itself going down the road. First builder rebuilt it twice in 8 months, and on what would have been the 3rd rebuild in about 14 months, said I'm done. Got half of my money back from initial build, and found another builder. Second guy rebuilt it and it was 100 times better. Drove it another year or so and sold it with the trans shifting perfect.

All this to say, make sure the trans you are buying has truly been rebuilt by someone who knows these transmissions. I'm no transmission guru, but there are things about this model, that if not done correctly on a rebuild, will just cause it to self destruct in very short order. Find out who did the rebuild and go talk to them, you may find they will rebuild yours for just a fraction more.

Good Luck.

Yea I'm strongly considering just taking the truck into a shop and having the transmission rebuilt, but the issue I have right now is paying for it. Transmission rebuilds generally cost around $2k, and that's money I just don't have right now, despite how badly I want this truck back to 100%.

If anybody knows of a reputable rebuilder in the DFW area who would help out by financing a rebuild and make sure to put a shift kit in during the rebuild, I'd be all over that.

Since the TCC clutch is not active on the 1-2 shift we can eliminate that as the cause.

My first guess would be the intermediate clutch is worn out.

It's very easy to explain how to do it. All you need to do to convert a 4x4 E4OD to a 4x2 is take EVERYTHING out of the transmission, down to the bare case. Now completely rebuild the trans with a 4x2 output shaft. Also, change the extension housing from a 4x4 to a 4x2 housing.

Yea Mark, this is kind of what I was afraid of. Some of the reading I've done pointed to exactly what you said, and that the 4x4 output shaft was shorter due to not needing the longer tail housing and having the transfer case in its place. The replacement unit that I'd found was a pretty good deal, but having to get somebody to tear the whole unit down to the bare case just to replace one part and then putting it all back together (even if it IS already outside of the truck) would likely get prohibitively expensive. Thanks for the breakdown.
