Had a 2005 F250 Lariat that broke the heat/ac fan hamster wheel which jammed. When I tried to free it the fan rheostat burned up. Now this was an automatic fan controller and was mounted on the fire wall near the fan. Back in 2008 cost was about $40. Not sure if the XL or XLT are in the same place.
There is not a blower motor resistor. There is a blower motor controller that controls the variable fan speed. It is mounted on the back side of the HVAC box that requries the HVAC box to be removed to replace it.

Does not apply to the OP's truck or question.
As Larry said, you have to pull the whole HVAC box. That means evacuating the A/C system, draining coolant, and pulling the whole dash to get to the HVAC box so IT can be removed. Hate to see the bill for this repair from a dealer....
BTW, the actual Motorocraft blower speed module is under $50 at RockAuto if you can DIY the above.
