64 4x4 conversion

My 64 f100 I am working on is a 2 wheel drive but has a solid front axle and what I'm wondering is how difficult is it to convert to 4x4 and is it even worth fooling with, the front axle that's in the truck now is in dire need of a rebuild anyway so if I could hang a 4 wheel drive axle on the leaf springs and get the steering to work properly I might as well. I'm just more curious than anything

If you find a front axle from a pre 1966 F100 4x4 it will bolt right in.

Really? I might can make it happen if that's the case. I have a friend that has 2 1959 f100 parts trucks both are 4x4 maybe he will part with a front axle reasonably. Thanks!

All the steering components will probably be different as well, ND can give you part #'s. Then you need to drive it with a transfer case, so the trans cross-member will be different as well as driveshafts. If you have a parts truck, the easiest way is to put the 2 chassis side by side and decide which frame is better and start swapping parts.

Years ago I used a '59 4x4 to convert a '60 F100 to 4x4, everything was pretty much just bolt on. Going '59 to '64 should be similar.
Eric, if you are converting a '65/66 to coil sprung 4x4 you can move the later year 4x4 to your twin I beam frame and it looks like a factory install. Building that truck right now.

My two cents, Way back when I had a 62 unibody with a shot out straight axle that I didn't know how to fix. Long story short, I ended up walking around the scrapyard with a tape measure and found an old dodge power wagon 4X4 front axle that had the same spacing for the leaf spring perches and the same lug pattern. It was an inch or two wider on the track but it worked and fixed 90% of my front end problems. I don't know what year the Dodge was or any difficulties I had putting it in, (this was over 30 years ago) but if a dumb teenager like myself at the time pulled it off, it must not have been too tough.

1959/65 F100 4WD has leaf spring front suspension, 1966/76* F100 4WD & 1975/79 F150 4WD have coil spring front suspension.

1976 was the first year that disc brakes were available for F100/250 4WD

*No F100 4WD's after 1976.

I have already cut the frame and spliced the front half of the 79 F-150 4x4 to the rear half of the'66 f-250 2wd. They matched up perfectly and it was quick and easy. In the process of converting it to Air ride now.

I've been looking for a steering arm for my 60 4x4 for over a year. Any chance your buddy would consider selling one?

Not mine, here is another one that has been converted, IMO, quite a while ago.1964 ford f100 4x4 camper - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) I think an early Bronco rear fender flare kit would be a good choice at this point.
