4 wheel drive install
hey, i bought a 2 wheel drive 96 f150 with a 302 cause i couldnt find a 4x4 i lilke...does anyone have a rough estimate on what it would cost to get four wheel drive installed?, thanks.

It would be cheaper to find a 4x4 frame, otherwise, you would need a different tranny, transfercase, the front axle, all of the steering componants, i think 3 grand would be a little on the cheap side.

the only things u need is a transfer case and mget your tranny changed to a 4x4 on and a front axle. i made my truck in to a 4x4 for around 500 bucks but now im pullin the ttb axle out for a solid axle i should have just put a soild axle in to start with. and if i was u i would just do it my self

I'm in the process of doing the conversion. I bought a parts truck for $100 that had everything i needed. If i had been in a hurry I could have done the swap for $300 (have to rebuild the tranny and replace a u-joint, $200+100 for the truck), but i decided to do it right and rebuild everything while it was out. In the end I'm going to be at about $1000 but that's with all of this new/rebuilt: D-44, spooled 9", T-18, twin stick NP 205, new lockout hubs, a U-joint, one lengthened driveshaft, and two 31-10.5/15's and doing ALL of the work on my own. When I'm done I'm going to have a $1500 4x4 (that includes the original purchase price of the truck) with a new drivetrain from motor to diffs. It doesn't really need a new 300, but i figure while i'm in the spending mood why not?
To me it is ENTIRELY worth it. If you can't do the work, there is NO WAY that it will be anywhere near cost effective. If that's the case I'd just start looking for a 4x4 that appealed to me.
