223 4x4?

Okay, so now that my '62 and I are all settled in Atlanta after our enormous roadtrip, I'm itching to get into the winter project. I've been pondering suspension and drivetrain possibilities for a while now and I can't seem to shake the idea of a 4x4 conversion. After my trip, I've fallen in love with my 223 and can no longer bear to yank it, but I think 4WD would be cool. Was there a 4x4 option for the 223 engine that I could convert to? Front axle and suspension seems pretty straightforward and easy, but can I make it all work with my 223 6 shooter? Let me know if anyone has tried this, and what you all think.

Thanks!

TJ, If a 4X4 is calling you, I think the best resolve might be to buy another truck. While not impossiable that one is gonna rank as a 10 on the scale of hard to do. IMHO

I have to agree with John. You would probably spend enough on the conversion to pay for 2 4x4's. Plus there's the aggravation of chasing parts. Just my opinion, though and you know the saying about those.

Actualluy a conversion of the 61 is fairly easy and straight forward

The 61 in four wheel drive configuration used a divorced transfer case and semi equal drive shafts.

You will need a front axle of the 59 to 65 F100 variety or a 59 to 72 F250 as it bolts directly to the spring perches and used the same ford steering box.in the 59 to 66 F250 ford used a Gemmer box for a little more heft. Either a used propeller intermediate shaft or new fabricated one. and 2 new slip type custom drive shafts. and a divorced transfer case and mount from a 61 to 72 (frames are same width).

In using this method you retain the stock 223, bell housing and transmission all ready in place.

Simple Simple Simple

I have the parts in storage to convert a 62 F250 uni long bed to four wheel drive.

I recently cut out my front axle and leaf springs from my 64 4x4 ford and welded in a 77 front axle. Now I have power steering and front disc brakes. So if you want the parts I have them. There is the front axle and leaf springs and since I put in a C6 and a 302 I have the 4 speed tranny and transfer case. If you are interested in the parts let me know.

Tj,

I'm taking my stock 4x4 front axle off of my 1962 f100 4x4 with a 223 in the next 2-3 months, to upgrade to a newer style front end. PM me say, late march.. and I'll make you a good deal on it, provide you with sufficiant info to get a transfer case setup and such.
