Tailgate handle linkage issues

I feel like a novice asking this, however its making me crazy so I figured I'd see if I'm missing something. I've tried one of every kind of plastic clip I can find to connect my tailgate handle to the linkage rods in the tailgate, and no matter what I try, first time I operate the handle the clips pop out of the holes. The holes don't appear worn out, but that seems to be the only thing that would make sense at this point. What are my options? Anyone else run into something like this and come up with a solution? I imagine my factory handle is made better than the chinesium aftermarket options, so I'd prefer to keep it if possible.

E6AZ-5421952-A .. Latch Rod Nylon Retainer / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.
1973/91 F100/350 Styleside Tailgate / 1983/91 Ranger Tailgate / 1973/79 F100/880 front door lock cylinder rods / 1980/2014 Econoline and etc etc etc. Shown under the original basic part number of 431C56

The tailgate rod clip (1973/96 same & R/L same) is available in the "help" section of auto parts stores and is also the same as the door lock cylinder rod clip of 1973/79 F100/350, 1974/78 LTD/Grand Marquis, 1979/91 Crown Vic/Grand Marquis, 1983/91 Ranger tail gate and etc.

E6AZ-5421952-A replaced D4AZ-6521952-A & E3TZ-1021952-A
Look up the tailgate clip basic part number of 431C56 in the 1973/79 truck catalog and you'll see it says refer to basic part number 21952.
The C/D catalog that was scanned from the 1980 edition that most everyone is using, shows the D4AZ number, but not the replacing part number of E6AZ. However, if people have the final edition of 10/1988 (only available on microfiche), it does show the E6AZ number.

Door rod clips might work? https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/en/...-retainer-clip

And or here is an home made option, made from a piece of aluminium I believe. Or if you can remove the rod, drill a real small hole in the rod and cotter pin it. But sourcing those clips seams the easiest.

I haven't found any clips that seem to last very long. I'm not sure if it's the fit or the quality but they always fail.

I had a similar problem, but didn't know there was a clip missing so I used some needle nose players and bent the rod slightly. Haven't had any issues since.

x2 on straightening the rod, a little tweaking may help

Number Dummy told me that the clips for the 1996 F150 tailgates and 1997 F250 & F350 (OBS style trucks) will work. And Ford still has them in stock.

I tried the ones from the HELP section and they lasted about a year. I keep forgetting to get a handful of the newer ones. That E6AZ is probably the number.

The next time you're in a place that has a tailgate bench that's all the rage, ask them if you can have the clips.

The info is post #2 was taken by Rich from one of my posts, possibly the parts catalog pic too.

The tailgate clip is available from Ford and also fits a gazillion different 1970's/90's FoMoCo passenger car door lock cylinder rods that attach to the latch.

Oh no it was ALL from you ND, (thanks again) and from one or 2 of the many threads you have replied to on this subject. I figured you were busy dodging the fire, so I tried to help out.

Fire passed us by, burned west towards Moorpark, now 80% contained.
