Tailgate Latch Repair

Did a search and couldn't find anything. Any tricks for reattaching the tailgate latch (Handle) to the rod (The top one leading to the right side of the tailgate)? I'm tearing into it this afternoon, but before I muddle through it thought someone may have figured out an easier way. Thanks!

Thanks...I can feel, but not really see, how the one on the top rod snapped now. I'll make a run and replace both while I'm at it!

If you unbolt the handle mechanism, you can pull it down enough to get at the connection points and replace the plastic retainers. It might take a little wiggling but you can get to it.
