Engine identification

Found an engine in the woods. Looks to be some type of FE? Just trying to get some info about this and if it's worth doing anything with it besides scrap. Thanks!

Probably scrap. Open to water etc. Take it apart and see what the bores look like, and what they mic out to. If it's a standard undamaged bore, it might clean up with an overbore. You will need a large hammer to remove pistons.

Bare heads might be fixable. Rocker shafts etc are probably rusted solid. Depends on casting numbers, but this looks like maybe a '65 casting for the '66 model year. (wag) So the heads are ho-hum, nothing special.

2bbl intake good if you have a boat in need of an anchor.

Depending on stroke, crank might be of value, if 3.78. Will need to be turned probably. Rods might be useable.

A bit of a project with a very modest return possible.

JMO.

Turn around and walk away Or dig a hole, push it in, and cover it back up.

Looks like a 360 or 352, to me.

It's probably toast if someone just dumped it in the woods.

Looks like it's been there long enough to rust through the valve covers...yikes. On the plus side, it's about 600 lbs of scrap iron....poor FE didn't deserve to be dumped like that. Might get a few usable parts out of it like was mentioned earlier.

Date code looks to be "6D15". April 15, 1966. Tax day. 352 or 390. Maybe.

Fun project for a kid looking to learn the internals and learn what it means to spin wrenches. It's not all clean, new stuff!

I'd say a 352. The block will be cracked if it freezes where it's at, having been open to the weather, the coolant passages will have had rainwater in them. The crank could be OK, but only usable if it's a 390 crank. I've rescued a Toploader 4 speed that was open to the weather with no top cover and the cluster bearings were fine. The timing cover likewise should be fine. Rods too.

It's free right? I say scoop it up and pull it apart over the winter just for something to do. Could use it to practice some hand machining skills on the block and heads. Build a couple shop stools with the camshaft and crank. Weld some of the bits together into a sculpture. Donate it to the local high school auto shop.
