I noticed that the pipe before my cat gets scorching hot in minutes of letting my engine run, while the pipe just after it is much cooler, enough that I can touch it without getting burnt.
Is this normal?

yep, cats have a cemical reaction that makes them extremly hot, much hotter than normal exhust. so thats why it does that
